How to Measure Your AI Visibility (and Why Only a Fraction of Marketers Do)

How to Measure Your AI Visibility (and Why Only a Fraction of Marketers Do)

AI visibility is how often and how favourably AI engines name your business when buyers ask questions in your category. It’s the answer-era equivalent of rankings. Most marketers don’t measure it yet because it doesn’t appear in a standard traffic dashboard, which is precisely why the businesses that start now build a lead. You measure it on two layers: presence in AI answers, and the organic signals that feed them.

Here’s the uncomfortable gap: buyers have moved to AI, but most measurement hasn’t. Teams keep optimising a clicks report while the decision is being made somewhere that report can’t see.

Why is almost nobody measuring this yet?

Because the tooling and the habit lag the behaviour. Buyers research in assistants, but a traffic dashboard only shows the small, qualified slice that clicks through. It’s blind to the far larger moment where the AI named a competitor and the buyer never visited anyone. Only a small minority of marketers currently track AI visibility at all, and only a quarter or so are even creating content specifically to be cited by AI. The behaviour is mainstream; the measurement is a rounding error.

That lag is not a problem to lament. It’s the opening. While most teams stare at clicks, the ones who start watching AI answers can see exactly where they’re absent and fix it before the category position is taken. If your measurement is still a clicks report, you’re optimising a stage of the journey that’s emptying out.

What should you actually measure?

Think in two layers. The answer layer is the new headline: for the questions your buyers actually ask, are you named and cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers? With what sentiment, and what share of voice against competitors? You check this by deliberately querying the assistants the way your buyers do. It’s the closest thing to a ranking report for the answer era.

The supporting layer is the organic data AI retrieval still leans on: impressions and average position in Search Console (ranking still helps, though only about 37% of AI Overview citations now come from top-10 pages, down from roughly 76% a study earlier), your brand-mention footprint (which correlates ~3× more than backlinks with AI visibility), and in GA4 the referral and conversion quality of AI-sourced visitors, using GA4’s AI Assistant channel group to measure your own ratio rather than borrowing a contested published multiple.

What this is not is a one-click dashboard you set and forget. AI answers shift, engines change, and competitors move, so measuring visibility is an ongoing read, not a number you check once. (For the specific KPIs to put on a dashboard, see AI visibility vs website traffic: the new KPIs; for proof of what moving them looks like, the case study.)

Setting up that measurement, reading it honestly and acting on the gaps is part of the work I do. If you want a baseline of where you stand in AI answers today, start with a free AI-visibility check.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI visibility mean? How often and how favourably AI engines name and cite your business for your category’s questions. It’s the answer-era equivalent of rankings.

How do you measure something that doesn’t send a click? On two layers: presence and sentiment in AI answers (checked by querying assistants), plus the organic signals (impressions, position, brand mentions) and the conversion quality of AI-referred visitors.

Why do so few businesses measure it? It’s new, invisible in standard dashboards, and requires checking AI answers directly. That lag is the opportunity.

Frequently asked

> What does 'AI visibility' actually mean?

AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI engines name and cite your business when people ask questions in your category. It's the answer-era equivalent of rankings, but measured by presence in answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) rather than by position in a list of links.

> How do you measure something that doesn't send a click?

On two layers. The AI layer: are you named and cited across assistants for your buyers' key questions, and with what sentiment and share of voice versus competitors. The supporting layer: the organic signals AI retrieval still depends on, impressions, average position and brand mentions, plus the conversion quality of the AI-referred visitors you do receive.

> Why do so few businesses measure AI visibility?

Because it's new, it doesn't show up in a standard traffic dashboard, and it requires deliberately checking AI answers rather than reading a clicks report. That lag is the opportunity: the businesses that start measuring, and acting on, AI visibility now are building positions before most competitors even look.
